Applying the shared risk and protective factors approach to reduce risky driving behavior,
Identifying interventions that can address these risk and protective factors to prevent motor vehicle-related injuries and fatalities, and
Utilizing data resources to measure the impact of these strategies.
Rather than focusing specifically on the driving behaviors themselves, this resource examines underlying risk factors (e.g., those that make it more likely for an individual to engage in risky driving behaviors) and protective factors (e.g., those that make it more likely for an individual to engage in safe driving behaviors) to identify high-leverage opportunities for reducing the burden of motor vehicle-related injuries and fatalities. Developed with support from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), this resource document presents a variety of concepts and tools for applying a shared risk and protective factors approach to driving safety. To that end, public health professionals, highway safety professionals, researchers, and policy makers can use this resource to:
Identify risk or protective factors to address driving behaviors on the population level.
Identify and determine the quality of behavior change strategies that reduce risk factors and/or promote protective factors.
Identify new partners for collaboration, such as law enforcement, mental health service providers, or public policy officials.
Identify the most appropriate data sources to assess the effectiveness of behavior change strategies.
Coordinate efforts that consider the individual in the context of their home, neighborhood, and communities.
Integrate efforts to address shared risk and protective factors into existing or new program strategies.
