Colorado Youth Concussion Act

Colorado Senate Bill 11-040 went into effect on January 1, 2012. Also known as the “Jake Snakenberg Youth Concussion Act”, this new legislation seeks to keep the student/athletes of Colorado safe from concussion/brain injury.

About the Presenter
Karen McAvoy, PsyD is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist and School Psychologist. She is currently (half-time) at the Colorado Department of Education as the Principal Consultant on Brain Injury. She is also (half-time) as the Director of the Center for Concussion with Rocky Mountain Hospital for Children. Her two positions allow her a unique view of concussion/brain injury from both the educational and a medical perspectives. Dr McAvoy was the School Psychologist at Grandview High School when Jake Snakenberg passed away from “Second Impact Syndrome” and as a result, she is the authored REAP - A Community-Based Concussion Management Protocol for Families, Schools and Medical Providers.
