Training Opportunities: U.S. Dot Summit on Pedestrian Safety

The United States Department of Transportation (U.S. DOT) invites you to participate in the U.S. DOT Summit on Pedestrian Safety: Virtual Series. The purpose of this webinar series is to provide a virtual platform for dialogue and opportunity to discuss pedestrian safety issues and priorities. The webinars will include remarks from U.S. DOT Secretary Elaine L. Chao, FHWA’s Administrator Nicole R. Nason and NHTSA’s Deputy Administrator James C. Owens in addition to guest speakers from leading transportation safety organizations.

Taking Action on Pedestrian Safety - Part 1: Introduction and Safe System Approach
In this event, FHWA Administrator Nicole R. Nason and NHTSA Deputy Administrator James C. Owens will be joined by leading State transportation experts to discuss the current state of pedestrian safety and issues surrounding this problem. In addition, we will identify potential actions that can be taken to enhance pedestrian safety in the US and receive feedback from attendees on those solutions. U.S. DOT will give a safety data overview and provide a glimpse at the 2019 preliminary data release.

Taking Action on Pedestrian Safety - Part 2: Consider Risk: When, Where, Who, How?
This event will focus on risk factors that impact pedestrian safety. “When, Where, Who, How?” refers to the time of day, the type of road, the demographics, and the behaviors that heighten pedestrian risk. This session will provide attendees the opportunity to hear from U.S. DOT leaders and key safety stakeholders and then collaborate on joint solutions to address these high risk pedestrian safety issues.
July 28, 2020 - 1:00-2:00 p.m. EDT
Taking Action on Pedestrian Safety - Part 3: Next Steps
This closing session will discuss the planned efforts of U.S. DOT and leading safety stakeholders to address pedestrian safety. This dialogue will gather input from safety professionals regarding opportunities and challenges in improving pedestrian safety, as well as successes and lessons learned which will help to inform future actions. We will revisit the draft current and planned U.S. DOT actions to enhance pedestrian safety, providing attendees an opportunity to submit feedback and will include closing remarks from FHWA’s Administrator, Nicole R. Nason and NHTSA’s Deputy Administrator, James C. Owens.
