Child Passenger Safety Week and New CDC State Fact Sheets on Restraint Use

Child Passenger Safety Week starts today! This is a great week to learn more about how to:

  • Buckle kids correctly
  • Identify and understand the car seat stages
  • Avoid common mistakes when using car seats, booster seats, and seat belts

CDC released new state-based fact sheets on restraint use, which provide an overview of proven strategies to increase the use of car seats, booster seats, and seat belts. CDC encourages states to use the new state-based fact sheets to identify strategies to help people stay safe on the road.

Strategies to increase seat belt use include:

  • Primary seat belt laws
  • Increased penalties for violating seat belt laws
  • Short-term, high-visibility enforcement of seat belt laws
  • Integrated nighttime enforcement programs

Strategies to increase car seat and booster seat use include:

  • Child restraint laws
  • Strengthening current laws with booster seat provisions
  • Enhanced enforcement programs
  • Distribution plus education programs
  • Incentive and education programs
